Michael Bloomberg, the mayor of NYC, has just signed several bills into law which will reform the food system by promoting urban farming, sustainable, and local food.
"This package of legislation is a key component of City Council Speaker Christine Quinn's highly praised "Food Works" plan, which is designed to significantly overhaul our regional food system."
Two of the bills promote rooftop gardens, which makes sense in a city with a seemingly unlimited sea of big buildings. Imagine if the majority of the rooftops were growing food, that would go a long way to feed the citizens and stimulate the economy.
This is great news, and perhaps will spark a trend in many other cities. With rising food costs and a weak economy, local food makes more and more sense.
