We are conditioned to love things that will make our life easier. Items like cars, computers and convenience foods have weaved their way into our daily routine and have now become commonplace. While I can't turn back the clock or help you find an alternate route to work, I can certainly share some delicious copycat recipes that capture the flavors our favorite breakfast convenience foods but have them be prepared at home. These recipes are healthier in the sense that they contain no artificial ingredients or flavorings, have less sugar and fat and are just an all around better food. These are great foods to make during the weekend so they can be enjoyed all week long.
McGriddle Sandwich
Recipe from Cookin' with Super Pickle
While the drive-thru may be tempting, nothing tastes better than a homemade McGriddle. Your secret weapon for this recipe is the maple crystals that are scattered throughout the pancake batter during the cooking process. You can purchase maple candy or make your own using 100% maple syrup. This touch of sweetness combined with the sausage, egg, and cheese is simply dynamite.
Strawberry and Cream Cheese Toaster Strudel
Recipe from I Wash You Dry
Flaky, buttery, and all-around fabulous are one way to describe a homemade toaster strudel. This copycat recipe only requires a handful of ingredients (most of which you probably already have on hand) and is a snap to make. Instead of stuffing your freezer with boxes of premade pasties, stock up on puff pastry so that you can prepare a toaster strudel whenever you have a hankering for a sweet breakfast treat.
Cinnamon Sugar Pop Tarts
Recipe from Sally's Baking Addiction
Every child remembers the moment when they first open a bag of pop tarts; the silver casing conceals two sweet pastries that are begging to be eaten. While pop tarts from scratch may not be the easiest recipe to grace our pages, it's definitely one of the most rewarding. The homemade pie crust with a brown sugar filling and cinnamon glaze is heaven at first bite.
