Slow food Nation is a grassroots organization that is working hard to preserve traditional foods in the modern world. They save heirloom seeds, support local farmers, and build community. Now, the Slow Food Charlotte Chapter has partnered with Friendship Trays, a nonprofit meal delivery program. From this partnership has come a variety of whimsical local gardens started by the Friendship Tray's desire to provide homegrown veggies in the meals that they deliver. Now Friendship Gardens has even expanded to include Charlotte's local correctional facility, also known as Camp Green Prison. The prisoners and staff are being educated about how to grow, harvest, and cook the crops. Hopefully this is a trend that will expand. People who may not have had access to healthy, local produce now have the tools to feed themselves and build community in the process.
