Help Prevent Diabetes with a Good Night's Sleep

May 17, 2011

A new study shows that lack of sleep is associated with higher levels of blood glucose, insulin, and insuiln resistance in those with type 2 diabetes. "It is possible that the effects of sleep disturbances are more pronounced in subjects with diabetes because the mechanisms responsible for glucose homeostasis are already deficient and therefore more vulnerable," write the study authors.

Snoring, which is is a possible indicator of sleep-disordered breathing, was also associated with higher levels of fasting glucose. Whether the impaired blood sugar levels cause insomnia or if it's the lack of sleep causing the imbalance in blood sugar was not determined. The bottom line is that the human body needs quality sleep each night so it can rest and repair. If you are having trouble sleeping check out these tips for getting a better night's rest.
