Kenya Buying GM Maize Flour

July 9, 2011

The Kenyan government will be allowing imported genetically modified maize flour to help with the acute food shortage in the country.

This cheaper version, will be clearly labelled to allow the consumers to choose between GM and non GM versions.

Protesters claimed that the shipment of GM maize that is already docked and waiting to be distributed in Mombasa, could contaminate the soil. The African goverments have been pressured by pro-GM lobbies to allow the crops, saying that it will avert the food shortage.

In the past, Zambia rejected GM food aid during a food crisis in 2002 that affected three million people.
