Jillian Michaels, former fitness trainer on The Biggest Loser recently wrote letters to House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, asking the US government to stop funding unhealthy foods.
In the letter, Michaels encouraged a five-step program to eliminate overall consumption of processed meats and cheeses, as well as junk foods like candy. This program comes from the Physician’s Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), who also suggest the government makes specific changes such as reforming food stamps and forcing farmers to clean up their own waste. According to the PCRM, these changes could save tax payers $383 billion in 10 years.
“Cutting subsidies for unhealthful foods would trim the nation’s budget—and Americans’ waistlines," Michaels wrote in her letters to Congress. "Some of our government’s current policies and programs actually promote obesity and other diseases by supporting the production and consumption of the very foods that contribute to… health problems. ”
PCRM says their program would also include introducing healthier foods to kids in schools and fighting childhood obesity.
