Now here's a sustainable idea on many levels; a stimulus package for farmers markets. Since farmers markets provide local, organic food and help create community, why not add some funding so that they can grow even more.
The Farmers Market Coalition has provided some interesting statistics that perhaps the government, should take a serious look at.
"The Crescent City Farmer's Market in New Orleans generated $9.88 million in total economic impact in 2010. 152 farmer's markets in Iowa provided 576 jobs, $59.4 million in economic output, and a $17.8 million increase in income".
It's inevitable that these markets will keep growing as more people learn about GMOs, toxins, and sustainability. Markets are also friendly for the wallet, since buying directly from the farmer can significantly reduce costs. It seems like a win-win for everyone involved.
