This futuristic Microbial Home concept kitchen is something out of a sci-fi movie: human methane from your home is used to feed bioluminescent bacteria, which in turn illuminate the kitchen. Evaporative coolers and terracotta bins keep foods at specific temperatures, while a glass beehive promotes local pollination and provides honey.
Clive van Heerden and Jack Mama of Philips Design were the brains behind the Microbial Home. Van Heerden said of the concept, "Energy-saving light bulbs will only take us so far. We need to push ourselves to rethink domestic appliances entirely, to rethink how homes consume energy, and how entire communities can pool resources."
