In Grand Rapids, Michigan, vendors at the Fulton Street Farmers market can now use wireless card readers to accept food stamps and WIC benefits.
If a vendor doesn't own a iPod or iPhone to attach the card reader to, they are given an iPod and card reader to use.
This pilot program in Michigan, is funded by the USDA, which has awarded over $160,000 in grants to implement wireless technology into farmers markets. Currently, almost half of the country's 7,000 farmers markets have wireless transaction devices or access to electricity.
