Oregon social services is now allowing some food stamp participants to deduct the cost of their medical marijuana from their income when applying for eligibility. Permanently disabled Oregon residents, and the elderly are the two groups that are able to claim the deduction.
State officials say the number of people who fall into these two categories is quite small. According to Bill Esbensen, who runs 45th Parallel Compassion Group, a medical marijuana dispensary, claims that 60% of the patients are eligible for food stamps although not all of them receive them or even know of this deduction.
