Tennis star Maria Sharapova has launched her very own line of candy called Sugarpova.
"I wanted to own something -- something 100% me," Sharapova said. "Where I make all the final decisions; here I'm involved from start to finish; where I was bringing in my own people I want to work with and investing my own money. I wanted fun and young and nothing too serious. That's how it came about with candy."
Sharapova has been working with Jeff Rubin, the founder of It'sugar and FAO Schweetz. He's the one that came up with the name for the tennis player's latest venture.
"It was a spur of the moment -- after a couple drinks," Rubin said. "The second we said it, [Sharapova's agent Max Eisenbud] looked at me and smiled and said, 'That's it.' It was fortuitous."
Sugarpova is now available at Henri Bendel on Fifth Avenue, at It'sugar outlets worldwide, and online at sugarpova.com. The candy will also be available in hotel minibars.
