5 DIY Foods You Can Prepare at Home

August 30, 2014

Preparing your favorite store bought foods from scratch gives you a sense of empowerment by allowing you to take control of what your putting into your body.  While I am not suggesting that you have to make every jar, bottle and boxed food, there are certainly a handful of them that are easy enough to do yourself.  Enjoy the process because in the end, these DIY foodie projects are supposed to be fun.  Below are five simple DIY recipes to get you started.

Homemade Nutella

If you have a food processor or a high powered blender, you can make the addicting chocolate hazelnut spread, Nutella, at home any time you want.  You can use the chocolate-hazelnut spread with fruit, between cookies, or just on a spoon.  I like to spread it on bread and make a sweet panini.

Non-Dairy Milk
Recipe from The Frosted Vegan

Nut milks such as cashew, pistachio, and almond are great milk alternatives to those who are practicing a vegan diet or who are lactose intolerant.  You can replace non-dairy milk in many recipes that call for cow's milk at a one to one ratio.

Cottage Cheese
Recipe from Tips - Mental/ Physical Health

Homemade cottage cheese can be paired with fresh fruit, chopped nuts, or use it to make this awesome Cottage cheese pie.  The key to fabulous cottage cheese is beginning with quality milk.  You will be able to taste the difference between using organic whole milk and industrial dairy milk.  Splurge on the good stuff.

Sriracha
Recipe from Blue Kale Road

The famous red rooster hot sauce makes anything it touches that much better.  The chile of choice for this sauce is Fresno which is available at most supermarkets.  It definitely has a kick but is not overwhelmingly hot.

Waffle and Pancake Mix
Recipe from Liv Life

Pre-made pancake and waffle mix is a life saver when you're in need of a quick breakfast.  This mix is healthier than the boxed stuff because it contains nutritious additions including spelt flour, oat flour, chia seeds, and flax meal.
