Cuckoo for Coconut Water

May 31, 2011

Coconut water is all the rage, and with good reason. It's loaded with electrolytes and is naturally sweet, unlike most sports drinks that are packed with sugar, HFCS and artificial colors and flavors. Nature is infinitely wise, and coconuts grow in hot countries where there is a greater loss of electrolytes. But as is often the case, when a food or drink gets popular many lower quality products appear among the gems.

Let's take a look at some of the most widely available brands that I've also tried.

Zico**
Probably the most well-known brand, and it's made from concentrate. They also add natural flavors even to the plain variety, and it has a bit of an odd aftertaste. It's owned by coca-cola.

One**
Very sweet and doesn't quite taste like coconut. Company is now owned by Pepsi.

Taste Nirvana Real Coco
My personal favorite! It's the closest thing to drinking an actual coconut, and the whole line is organic. Since it comes in a glass bottle, the taste isn't altered. For the ultimate cooler on a hot day, try the version with fresh aloe slices.

Vitacoco
Definitely has an actual coconut taste, and is the best tasting of the non-organic brands.

Nature Factor
This has a surprisingly good flavor for being in a can. It's made with organic young coconuts, and it's not too sweet. Definitely my runner up.

**I wrote this before I knew that Zico and One had been bought by Coke and Pepsi. I find it interesting that they were my least favorites, because they didn't taste like actual coconut water.

I've been buying Goya coconut water for years to hydrate after a night out. Have you researched that brand?

I would not recommend Goya because they use sodium metabisulphate (a preservative) which is not necessary. They also add sugar, again not necessary. I would try one of the brands that I mentioned, or any that are simply coconut and water.

Maybe it's in glass containers in stores, but it's in cans at Amazon. Heading: "Nature Factor Organic Young Coconut Water, 10-Ounce Cans (Pack of 12)". Not that this is a problem, just a note for those reading this. It, and the other two you liked best, are all available for subscriptions at Amazon, making it even cheaper.

Its like you read my mind! You appear to know so much about this, like you wrote the book in it or something. I think that you can do with some pics to drive the message home a bit, but instead of that, this is excellent blog. An excellent read. I’ll definitely be back. regards!
