Lab results confirm a particularly deadly strain of e coli was present in the system of a child who died last weekend in Virginia, Department of Health Public Information Officer Robert Parker said. Another severe case of e coli has been confirmed in Knoxville, Tenn., where another child is battling complications in the hospital.
There have been seven other confirmed cases of e coli in Tennessee, but luckily, a less-severe strain.
There hasn't been any official confirmation of the source of the e coli. People in the surrounding areas are being encouraged to properly wash and handle their produce and cook meat to the USDA recommended temperatures.
The child who died in Dryden, Va. was brought to the hospital after being exposed to e coli from a contaminated pool. Her brother was also suffering from symptoms and has been transferred to another hospital.
