Everyday, more Americans are growing veggies in their own backyards. This is an exciting trend that is taking the local food movement to the next level.
One area of concern is that much of the soil is full of lead, so get your soil tested for containments before starting your garden. A friend of mine had her Brooklyn, NY soil tested, and the lead content was hundreds of times higher than the accepted safe levels. The trouble is that most old houses were covered with lead paint, and over time it flakes off into the yard.
Raised beds are an effective solution. They do require some effort, but are worth it in the long run. A simpler solution, for some, is to grow the veggies in pots.
Either way, be sure to always test your soil before planting!
