Starbucks Switching Dyes From Beetles To Tomatoes

June 27, 2012

Recently, Starbuck's treats and smoothies with shades of red, were discovered to have been dyed with Carmine, a red dye made from cochineal beetle.

After garnering over 6,000 signatures asking for a change, Starbucks has announced that they will stop using Carmine and switch to a new colorant known as Tomat-O-Red. Derived solely from lycopene, an antioxident found naturally in tomatoes, Tomat-O-Red is a vegetarian alternative to the traditional dye and is available in a wide range of red shades.
